The wonder garden
Let’s work our magic in your garden.
The Wonder Garden is a new way to confidently buy plants for your flowerbeds in a selection of styles, delivered to your door with a bespoke plan designed to match your space, including simplified aftercare instructions.
Are your flower beds looking a bit underwhelming?
We know, it’s not easy to get all the plants in your garden working together in harmony. Trial and error can be costly and frustrating, leaving you with long seasons where there is no colour, fragrance or anything much to look forward to at all.
How it works.
1. book a consultation
A chance for John Foley, our nursery owner and highly experienced horticulturalist, to meet at your outdoor space to discuss your dream garden.
£100 initial fee.
This will then be deducted from your final design, plants, and delivery.
2. UNDERSTAND YOUR GARDEN
An in-depth consultation will allow John to understand your aspects, soil type/s, ideas and style preferences, before he advises what will work and thrive in your space. Measurements will be taken, a rough plan drawn up, and proposed costings explained.
3. JOIN US AT THE NURSERY
An opportunity to meet with us at Holden Clough to go over your personalised plant choices and style options, from our Frameyard & Wonder Garden area to our Growing Field, allowing you a real feel and sense of your proposed design.
4. your BESPOKE DEsIGN
We will then design a scheme to match your specific conditions, in your chosen style, with all the plants thoughtfully hand-picked from our Nursery.
5. Your plants arrive
Your plants will be carefully packed, delivered to your space and then laid out in their set places, matching your personal design scheme.
6. it’s time to garden
Now for the fun part, getting your hands dirty and popping your plants in the ground where we have placed them. You can, of course, get someone else to do this, but we think planting is good for the mind, body and soul!
Then sit back, watch them flourish, and enjoy your new Wonder Garden!
It’s time to add some wonder.
The Wonder Garden is a new way for you to confidently create the flower beds and garden borders of your dreams.
After a consultation with John Foley, we’ll design a planting scheme that suits your space, your growing conditions, and your style. We’ll then personally deliver and set out your plants, exactly where they need to be. All you need to do is plant them and care for them, with the easy-to-follow aftercare guidance provided.
You’ll then enjoy an inspiring garden that’s full of interest, colour and wonder, season after season.

Large specimen trees and shrubs, topiary, hedges, garden ornaments, pots, bulbs, organic matter, mulch etc, can all be discussed and added to your designs.
What preparation do I need to do before my Wonder Garden is delivered.
Every space will have different needs, and we will let you know when we do the survey. However, unless you are keeping particular plants, the rest of the bed will need to be free and ready for the new plants. Ordinarily, this could include removing old plants, weeds, turf or rocks. Ensure you thoroughly dig out roots as you don’t want old plants or weeds to grow into your WG. Dig over to a forks depth and mix in / condition the soil with some well-rotted organic matter like mushroom compost or manure, and mix it in.

We understand that things can come up last minute. Please call us on 01200447615 and email design@holdenclough.com if you wish to amend / cancel your booking. Please allow at least 48 hours’ notice for any change or cancellation.
If you cancel under 48 hours and do not wish to reschedule, we cannot provide you with a refund for your consultation fee. We hope you understand that we are busy and John’s schedule is very tight. If you cancel with little time, we will be unable to fill that consultation / design space with another WG client, and therefore we lose that income.
-
Your consultation fee will be deducted from any orders that are placed with us. If you don’t go ahead with us for the design, your consultation fee is non-refundable as it will pay for John’s time, expert advice, and basic drawing of what you could achieve.
-
We work on a payment in full basis, less you consultation fee, when you go ahead with your personal Wonder Garden design. This allows us to allocate, grow or source the plants and specimens, trees (if any) that will be needed for your design, as well as blocking out your Wonder Garden in our design and delivery schedules.
-
Delivery can be anywhere between 3-6 weeks from the point of placing your order. Every Wonder Garden differs due to size, and if there are additional extras that need ordering etc. However, when you place your order, we will agree on dates for your survey and delivery that will work for both you and us, logistically.
-
We are based in Lancashire and have many clients across the North West and beyond. For areas outside of the Northwest, please contact us, and we can discuss what options are available.
-
We believe in educating our customers, discussing suitable plant preferences for the green fingered and amateur gardeners alike. We’ll give you guidance and are always on the other end of the phone. You are also welcome to pop into The Nursery any time, too.
-
We would recommend that you are at home when we deliver, as we cannot take responsibility for any mishaps. Time-specific deliveries are available so that we can work around your schedule. If you cannot be there, we can still deliver, and we will discuss access instructions.
-
We can help coach and guide you through these processes or liaise with your gardener too. This also a service we may be able to offer to you, depending on size, location, and at an additional cost. If you’d like us to do any of these steps, please ask and we will advise.
-
When you receive your Wonder Garden plants, our team will set them out exactly where they need to be in your flower bed. They will then all simply need to be planted in their places by you or someone else.
-
Aftercare guidance, in a simplified format tailored to your Wonder Garden, will be provided when your plants are delivered and set out.
-
With the correct preparation and mulching, maintenance can become very simple and manageable. Mulching will help reduce water evaporation during in long, dry spells, meaning you have longer to enjoy your WG with minimal effort. The aftercare guidance we provide will also help you to understand the needs of specific plants. As an example, when to prune a Hydrangea if you have one.
-
Within the first year of planting, until plants are full established, you must ensure the beds and plants don’t dry out. The frequency of watering will depend on rainfall. Plants that require drier conditions still need watering, especially those in a sheltered position. In the event of a hosepipe ban, please ensure you water plants with a watering can. Mulch helps reduce water evaporation and retains moisture, so do ensure this step is completed.
-
You will receive a courtesy call approximately 1 year after your Wonder Garden was delivered. This will be your opportunity to discuss how your Wonder Garden is establishing and / or any concerns. We pride ourselves on providing the hardiest and healthiest plants, but in the unlikely event that you sustain a plant loss in the first year, we will return to your site to discuss options and replacements. You are of course welcome to contact us before this time if you have any questions or concerns.
-
Yes. We can organise designs and supply in stages to meet your requirements and preparation timescales. Costings are itemised and can easily bebroken down into phases.
-
The service we provide is to guarantee hardy and healthy plants suitable for your garden and conditions. We understand if you may wish to keep a plant that has sentiment for example so we can always incorporate that into the design?
-
This is often an expectation that can be achieved, alongside many other preferences. It’s all dependent on your space / conditions and can be discussed at your consultation / design meeting.
-
In your consultation, we can discuss how to link certain garden styles, along with how they can be tailored to your preferences and conditions.
