The Autumn Garden…with John Foley

  • Holden Clough Nurseries Clitheroe, England, BB7 4PG United Kingdom (map)

Friday 5th September 2025, 9.15am-11.30am & 18.15pm-20.00pm

Traditionally, Autumn is the best time to plant…

From shrubs for winter interest to perennials for height, colour and to fill any gaps. It’s also the best time to get your spring bulbs in the ground or into your chosen containers. The soil is warm and moist to promote healthy roots, helping them to establish before dormancy. Anything planted in Autumn will have a super start and may be double in size next year!

Autumn is also a time to get lots of garden jobs done, wrapping up a (hopefully) successful summer, and preparing for the winter ahead.

In this informative talk, John will go into much detail about the following:

Jobs to do in the garden this Autumn - Tips on pruning, tidying borders, and removing dead or diseased plants to promote healthy growth next season.

Dividing & replanting – what plants you can divide and replant, and how best to do it.

How to create Autumn interest in the garden – from plants, trees, shrubs and hedges, and even garden ornaments. Incorporating hardy perennials, ornamental grasses, and asters to maintain interest and colour into late autumn.

Autumn container planting – Autumn bedding. Which plants are great for containers, and bulb planting into containers.

Planting Spring Bulbs – Autumn is the best time to plant bulbs like daffodils, tulips, and crocuses for vibrant spring displays.

Autumn Lawn Care - Raking leaves, aerating, and feeding lawns to prepare for winter dormancy and ensure a lush spring revival.

Wildlife-Friendly Gardening - Creating habitats with leaf piles, seed heads, and native plants to support bees, birds, and insects during colder months.

Compost and Soil Health - Using autumn garden debris to create compost, enriching soil for next year’s planting plans.

Planning for Next Year - Reflecting on this year’s successes and planning new plantings, crop rotations, and garden improvements for the upcoming season.

Planting schemes - John will also touch on planting schemes, and how to add interest, colour and stle to your beds.

The aim of this talk is to provide you with enough information for a great Autumn in the garden, preparing your for the seasons ahead.
