John’s April jobs for the garden…

March may have invited us gently into the garden but as April appears, so does much more light and sunshine, meaning our plants gain much more traction with their growth. Not only our plants, but weeds too, so it’s time for us to be ahead of them with mulching, pruning and more. It’s a joyous time to be in teh garden to enjoy watching all this new life appear, we hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Here’s what you can do this month…

  • Mulching, mulching and more mulching! -Weeds can grow just as fast, or faster than plants. Keep them at bay with a good thick layer of mulch. Even on containers.

  • Feeding Vitax Q4 will help to give all your ornamental plants the nutrients they need to flower and be happy.

  • Encourage wildlife - Whether you build a hedgehog house or a small pond, they'll help you balance the critter and small creature population.

  • Roses - Spray an organic fungicidal solution to help prevent blackspot and rust. 1 part milk and 10 parts water, with a splash of washing-up liquid every 2 weeks.

  • Feed Auriculas - Add some tomato feed to your water to help encourage strong blooms.

  • Continue sowing seeds to give you vegetables aplenty and experiment with some new varieties, too.

  • Prune Dogwoods - Cut them back hard to 15cm. This will encourage colourful new growth.

  • Reflect - Embrace the time of year with some days enjoying the sunshine and your spaces, and all nature has to offer.
