John’s May jobs for the garden

We go in to May following one of the hottest Aprils for many many years. It’s delightful to see so many of you joining us at The Nursery getting new plants, seeds, gardening tools and compost, excited for the season ahead! Here’s a roundup of what we can do in the garden this May…

Plant Summer Bedding – Add vibrant colour and to borders, beds and containers with petunias, marigolds, and begonias and more, but watch out for late frosts!

Plant vegetables – Sow seeds of carrots, swedes, lettuce, radishes, and beans for a summer harvest.

Prune Spring-Flowering Shrubs – Lightly prune rhododendrons, azaleas, japonica or Choisya and Ribes once they’ve finished flowering.

Weed and Mulch Borders – Remove any weeds and apply mulch to conserve moisture and suppress more weeds.

Feed Lawns and Plants – Apply a balanced fertiliser to promote healthy growth. We prefer Q4.

Edge Garden Borders – Create neat, defined edges around flower beds and lawns.

Install or Maintain Garden Features – Clean and repair birdbaths, fountains, or garden furniture.

Plant Herbs and Soft Fruit – Grow herbs like basil, parsley, and soft fruits like strawberries.

Start Composting – Add garden waste to compost bins to create rich compost for upcoming planting.

Water Regularly – Ensure plants, lawns, and newly sown seeds receive consistent moisture during the warmer weather we’re getting at the moment.
